The name TEARMANN comes from a Gaelic word meaning 'refuge'. While members of the Tearmann Society
engage in various activities in support of the victims of family violence, the most important role of Tearmann
House is to be a safe place for battered women and their children.
Tearmann House Offers:
shelter to women in physically, emotionally, and/or sexually abusive relationships
food, shelter, and basic personal needs for women and their children
a child care program which recognizes the children are in a crisis too and provides services to meet their needs
skilled and supportive staff to provide information, referrals, counselling, and support groups
shelter 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to a 6 week maximum.
Tearmann House is Committed To:
providing a safe, secure shelter to women and their children in physically/emotionally/sexually abusive relationships
providing a supportive environment in which they may begin to regain control of their lives
informing women of realistic alternatives available to them
allowing women the opportunity to discuss, explore, and follow through on those alternatives
helping women recognize that their opinions matters and their decisions will be respected
Tearmann Outreach for Women, Children and Teens:
Support groups
a confidential, safe place to explore choices and learn new skills
Support counselling
in person or by phone, allowing women, children, and teens to be heard, ask questions, explore options, and make plans for their future
Information
on what happens because of abuse, women's rights, safety, relationships, how to communicate feelings to to others, and services available in the community
Referrals
if requested, to other agencies such as schools, mental health, housing, recreation, etc.
Advocacy
help gaining services from other agencies such as Legal Aid, Community Services, etc.
Public education
workshops and presentations are offered to community groups, organizations, boards, youth clubs, schools, and church groups to raise awareness of violence in our community.

Our Purpose
To Eliminate Violence Against Women in
Nova Scotia by:
- Working collaboratively with other equality seeking organizations, and the three levels of government, to address barriers that prevent women, and their children from living free of Violence and Abuse
- Advocating for sufficient programs, services and funding for Transition Houses in Nova Scotia
- Increasing public awareness of Violence and Abuse in our society
- Conducting and/or participating in Feminist Participatory Research
- Providing training and networking opportunities for Boards and Staff of our Member Organizations
